This original marriage certificate is from 1883. It was stored tightly rolled and was badly torn. The document was carefully unrolled and is mounted on acid free board with mylar mounting strips. The tears were repaired with a document repair tape meeting Library of Congress Standards. A single silk matboard is utilized and is accented with two fillets – one gold, one black to replicate the look of the moulding. The double fillet creates sufficient depth to keep the glazing (museum glass) away from the certificate. If the wooden fillets were allowed to directly touch the marriage certificate, acid burn would result causing damage and deterioration of the paper. Therefore, an aluminum barrier tape that prevents acid damage from the fillets covers them on the inside of the frame package.
